Thursday Picture – Emily Brontë

Arthur Bell Nicholls destroyed the rest of this portrait, known as the Gun Group.  It was another of Branwell’s efforts and apparently the other likenesses were of very poor quality.  People have long speculated why he preserved the section of Emily, or even which sister it shows, as some feel it looks more like Anne.  Newer research does suggest that it is Emily after all, but the mystery is perhaps fitting given that she has always been the most enigmatic Brontë of them all.
