As a child I wanted to enter most of the books I read. I satisfied myself by drawing lots of maps and then staging a lot of the action with my toys. I won’t say how old I was when I stopped doing that because it’s rather embarrassing. As an adult, I still find myself slipping into a daydream about books that I have felt strongly about (and The Archers, that also occupies a lot of my daydream time). However, while The Time Traveler’s Wife is a strong contender here, I think the prize has to go to His Dark Materials. I think Lyra is amazing – part savage, part seer, she is a courageous crusader for justice. I think though that the main reason for choosing this one though is that from the very beginning I was fascinated by the concept of the external construct of the soul. I do occasionally (frequently) muse on what daemons might best fit people who I meet. It would make it a lot easier to get a read on a person’s character.
